Between the 19th and the 23rd of March the E-CAP team conducted an assessment of the 17 Otji-toilets that were constructed in Grundorn south and the greater Nico area in the Hardap region in the first year of the project. The Otji-toilet is a dry sanitation system developed in Namibia for Namibian conditions. The team held focus group discussions and met with representatives from various households at the two sites. They met with both families that are using the dry sanitation systems, as well as with families that have still not gained access to improved sanitation systems, e.g. using buckets or the bush. Function and user friendliness of the Otji-toilet, as well as challenges related to hygiene and health, were assessed and discussed with the community representatives.

Four students from the Worchester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) were part of the E-CAP team. Their focus was to investigate the current solid waste situation at these two rural sites. Their study is entitled “Support to Rural Communities for Improved Solid Waste Management and Ecosan”. The findings from the assessment of the Otji toilets, and the study by the WPI students, will be published on the DRFN website as soon as they are ready for dissemination.
