The Sustainable abattoirs project was implemented at Brukarros Meat Processors (BMP) between November 2013 and March 2014. It was implemented by the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia in collaboration with Sustainable Business Malardalen, Malardalen University, and the Swedish Agricultural University in Uppsala, with funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

The overall aim of the project was to investigate how to improve management of solid waste and waste-water at the abattoir and the tannery, as well as demonstrate how to decrease water consumption by implementing various water demand management approaches. The main objective of the project was for BMP to have a draft strategy for water and waste management. The strategy would serve as a tool to improve water efficiency and a way of creating a balance between the supply and use of water resources. It further provides recommendations toward technical and capacity development measures.
