Community based groundwater monitoring

The groundwater monitoring project aims at assisting existing community-based organisations in two pilot areas in the central northern part (Onkani) and north-western part (Grootberg) of Namibia to establish a local groundwater monitoring system, and to assess current water use practices and water dynamics.

Communities in these areas measure and keep records of rainfall and groundwater levels in their hand-dug wells and boreholes on a monthly basis. The project also focuses on analyzing groundwater quality in these rural areas. By keeping groundwater records, farmers can identify trends of these indicators, allowing them to make timely and informed management decisions. The information collected is incorporated in the national groundwater database within the Division of Geohydrology of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry. The project is funded by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Groundwater is a finite and vulnerable resource, essential to sustain life, development and the environment. Water development, management and monitoring should therefore be based on a participatory approach involving all users, planner and policy makers at all levels.
