Cuvelai-Etosha Basin

Sustainable integrated water resources management in the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin in northern Namibia (ACP-EU Cuvelai).

Since land and water productivity are closely interlinked, this project aims to enhance coordinated efforts to establish an integrated management approach connecting the critical issues of access to land, sustainable management of fragile natural resources and the sustainable utilisation of water in the Cuvelai-Etosha basin. The project attempts to link land reform and integrated water resources management. It has five main result areas namely

Creation of functional basin management institutions
Promote and support full stakeholders’ involvement in basin management activities
Provide technical support for IWRM
Develop IWRM plans for the basin
Build capacity for IWRM implementation

The project is jointly implemented by:

Desert Research Foundation (DRFN) of Namibia
Department of Water Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, Republic of Namibia
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), GmbH
Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).

The Cuvelai basin is located on the northern central part of Namibia. It forms a delta that drains the southern Angola and brings water to Namibia, and gradually converges into the Etosha Pan. On average, high floods of four in every ten years occurs. Local rains also contribute to surface flow in the basin.
